Councillor Matt Parr

LJAG is so sorry to hear of the death of Councillor Matt Parr. He was a great supporter of LJAG and many of our projects. Five years ago he was instrumental in setting up the Loughborough Farm which has grown into a very successful local food growing project which has engaged with nearly 500 volunteers and has clocked up over 10,000 volunteer hours since its inception, worth over £100,000 at the London Living Wage of £10.20.

The main Loughborough Farm site on Loughborough Road is now being developed at LJ Works which will provide low-cost workspace for local people and a permanent home for the Loughborough Farm. Matt ably chaired the LJ Works steering group of local community groups which is overseeing the project. Building works start on site any day now. Watch out for the bold and colourful hoardings which go up next week.

He was also very supportive of our efforts to reopen the Grove Adventure Playground for supervised play. In March 2017 he chaired an open meeting to see how much local support there was for reopening the Grove. Discovering there was, he attended many planning meetings and helped us obtain a lease on the building from Lambeth council. The fact that the Grove Adventure Playground is now open again for a summer playscheme is a fitting tribute to the contribution he made to improving the lives of the people who live in Loughborough Junction.

He also regularly attended, and often chaired, the LJ Neighbourhood Forum meetings which discuss everything from local planning applications to the Loughborough Junction Masterplan to changes to Lambeth’s Local Plan.

Matt’s funeral is on Friday 31 August at 1.15pm at West Norwood crematorium with a celebration from 2.30pm at Lambeth Town Hall. Anyone wanting to attend the celebration please contact [email protected] to say that you are going.

We found this picture of Matt, wearing an LJAG T-Shirt with our chair, Anthea Masey, at an LJ Works consultation meeting at the Loughborough Farm.
