Building Communities in Coldharbour

Building Communities in Coldharbour is a special initiative from the London Community Foundation funded mainly by J. P. Morgan Philanthropy as part of their ‘place based’ programme, focused on areas with multiple layers of social and economic disadvantage. It is also funded by Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust, and individual donors.  It focuses on encouraging residents in Loughborough Junction and the surrounding area to contribute their skills, ideas and time to improving the area for the whole community.

Community Challenge Fund
At the heart of the Building Communities in Coldharbour initiative sits the Community Challenge Fund, an area based funding programme that provides grants for local residents to develop and hone their ideas, turning them into successful project proposals that deliver activities and events of benefit to local communities. The Community Challenge Fund has provided grants for improvements to communal areas on local estates, trips to the seaside and community barbecues that attract hundreds of local people, personal development courses, arts and crafts sessions, a film festival, a money management project, yoga classes, consultation events, a series of issue based workshops that bring residents and service providers together to highlight and address the concerns of local people, and much much more. Over the past two years more than £175k has been awarded in grants that have funded 23 resident led projects, supported by 13 Lambeth based nurture organizations. The London Community Foundation (LCF) is an independent charity focused on social action in London. Its aim is to make it easier for Londoners to bring about positive change. LCF  does this by encouraging philanthropy and supporting community-based social action at the grassroots, primarily through grant funding and pathfinder initiatives. The Foundation has been grant-making in Lambeth for more than 17 years and during this time has established strong links with local organisations, groups and individuals.
