The Friends of Carnegie Library (FoCL) was formed in 1999 to protect Andrew Carnegie’s gift of a free public library on Herne Hill Road. Following a vigorous campaign to prevent closure, the main aims of FoCL today are to revitalise the library itself, and to protect the lovely Edwardian building and keep it in the public domain.
In 2012 the building was earmarked by Lambeth Council as a candidate ‘community hub’. A Project Group was formed to develop proposals including a business plan to generate enough commercial (rental) income to meet the upkeep of the building, while leaving space for the library and other community activities. The Project is under way (January 2014) and will have its own website shortly.
Meanwhile there are updates in the Friends’ newsletter which can be found on their website, along with details of the many events that take place in the library throughout the year.
