Job Description

Job Title: Play Lead, Grove Adventure Playground.

Hours of work: Up to 24 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during the half term and school holidays.

Location: On site.

Salary: Full-time equivalent is £28,860. Salary will be pro-rata.

Responsible for:Play Workers.

Responsible to: Playground Manager.

Relationships: All staff and volunteers at Grove, and other LJAG Projects.

Contract: Fixed term (1 year), subject to renewal.

About LJAG and Grove Adventure Playground

Loughborough Junction Action Group (LJAG) is a volunteer-led social action charity working in Loughborough Junction in south London. We run projects including the Grove Adventure Playground which we rescued from permanent closure in 2018. Our other projects include Loughborough Farm, a community food-growing project, The Platform Café, a community café, and Craft Workshops.

Overall responsibilities

Reporting to the Playground Manager, and working closely with the SENco, the Play Lead will create, plan and lead the delivery of high quality, inclusive play schemes, ensuring they are co-ordinated with other activities at the Playground; be the first point of contact for beneficiaries and their families; oversee the work of the Play Workers; uphold safeguarding, security, child safety and wellbeing policies at the Playground; support project/partnership activities such as Building Young Brixton.

Summary of responsibilities and duties.

Works closely with the SENco

• and with beneficiaries and their families to design and deliver high quality integrated play
schemes and activities.
• to organise rotas and oversee the work of the playworkers.
• to arrange DBS checks and relevant safeguarding and safety training for the team.
• to encourage volunteering, employability, educational and mentoring opportunities for the
young people at Grove.
• and with LJAG’s Safeguarding Manager and onsite Safeguarding Leads to promote a healthy,
risk-free and inclusive play environment at Grove.
• to maintain and update the website, events calendar and social media activities.
• to develop Grove’s partnership with Building Young Brixton (BYB) and other partnerships.
• on grant monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting to funders in a timely manner.
• to maintain a safe and clean environment, and to ensure opening and closing down. measures
are carried out efficiently and effectively.
• to promote an anti-racist and inclusive environment.
• to ensure continued development of the playground as a community hub and local resource.
• Any other duties reasonably identified by LJAG, Grove Committee, Playground Manager and
Safeguarding Lead.

General requirements

● Adhere to LJAG’s guidelines, policies and procedures.
● Participate in performance management, training, learning and development activities as
required.
● Take personal responsibility for safety as outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act
1974.
● Comply with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010, Data Protection Act 2018, and the
Computer Misuse Act 1990.

Person Specification

• Adventure playground or experienced in working with children and young people in a play or
youth setting.
• Knowledge of the importance of play in child development.
• Knowledge and understanding of the ‘Every Child Matters Framework’.
• Up-to-date knowledge of child safeguarding and health and safety regulations.
• Ability to plan and manage the work of a flexible working team.
• Ability to communicate confidently, both verbally and in writing.
• A strong awareness and understanding of racial and social justice.
• Ability to use IT systems – website, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and databases.
• Social media experience.
